A wide variety of topics/ subjects/ age groups can be catered for on a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Visit the world’s first passenger railway tunnel at Grosmont and view how steam works in our engine sheds, take a walk along the historic Rail Trail (there is an illustrated booklet available from any of the Railway’s shops), or simply give the children an unforgettable experience of steam travel which can be followed up at school with creative writing or topic work.

What’s coming up
Learning Programmes
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is part of an exciting project funded through Renaissance in the Regions, to provide quality Learning Programmes for schools to access on a visit to the Railway. These will consist of sessions led by a member of NYMR staff, covering a choice of History, Science, Geography, Design & Technology, Art, Literacy and Numeracy topics all relating to the Railway and closely linked to the National Curriculum and QCA Units. Initially we have designed two led sessions with supporting materials suitable for Key Stage 2 children, called ‘An Evacuation Experience’ and ‘Representing Journeys through Art’. These Learning Programmes have recently been successfully piloted by local schools and are available for schools to book from early 2008. We will eventually be expanding this to encompass inspiring learning experiences for other age groups, including community and adult groups as well as young people.
Outreach
If you can’t get to us, we can come to you! (distance permitting – we will currently consider travel up to 90 minutes from the NYMR) We can offer an increasing range of illustrated talks about aspects of the railway that fit in with many topics, such as Evacuation, The Victorians, George Stephenson, Levers, Friction, How a steam locomotive works and Bridges. Please contact Clare Avery on 01751 473799 or email clare.avery@nymr.co.uk for details.
