Footplate Experience

Dates are now available for Taster Courses (1st July onwards), Sampler courses (VERY LIMITED: 24th September & 24th October only) and 5-Day (14th-18th October) in 2008.

Thank you for your patience. Please note, anybody holding pre-purchased vouchers for a specific taster course, that cannot be accommodated this year, please contact us and ask to be be advised of dates for 2009, when they become available.

Prospectus for a 1 day ‘Taster’ course: Maximum of 1 person on each day. If two people are booked for the same day, theory is done together but you will each travel on a different locomotive due to footplate regulations.

We meet you at Grosmont Tea Room for breakfast at 09:30 hrs. You will have a short talk on safety and basic steam locomotive principles to be ready for your ride out on the footplate at 1030. Your return journey will take you a total of 36 miles to Pickering and back, a total runnning time of 3 hours.

Following lunch in the Tea Room, one of our instructors will take you on a tour of the Locomotive Depot and Workshops, concluding your day with a visit to the Signalbox.

This introduction to the steam railway is available to any fit person between the ages of 16 & 70 years.

The course fee includes breakfast, lunch & a 1 year membership of tne NYMR.

Course operates Mondays – Fridays (some exceptions) throughout the main running period. Unfortunately, there are no weekend dates and the course does not run on special event days or Bank Holidays.

Prospectus for a 1 day ‘Sampler’ course: Maximum of 2 persons on each day.

We meet you at Grosmont Tea Room for breakfast at 09:00 hrs. Then one of our instructors will take you on a short walk to the Locomotive Depot for a safety briefing. After this and under our supervision you prepare the engine, oiling up, examining, checking fuel and equipment and raising steam pressure. Once the engine is ready you will move it around the shed yard, familiarising yourself with the controls and how the engine responds.

Lunch is at 12:00. Afterwards you will drive and fire the locomotive on two return journeys up the bank to Goathland, returning on shed at approximately 15:00 where you will dispose of the engine – dropping the fire from the firebox, ash from the smoke box etc.

The ‘Sampler’ is open to all who are physically fit aged between 16 & 70 years.

The course fee includes breakfast, lunch and a 1 year membership of tne NYMR.

Dates and Prices for ‘Meal Course 2008 Maximum of 4 persons on each course.

Day 1.We meet you at Grosmont Tea Room for breakfast at 09:00 hrs. Then one of our instructors will take you on a short walk to the Locomotive Depot for a safety briefing, after which you will spend the day in the Enginemans Mutual Improvement Classroom,for both theoretical and practical instruction on all aspects of locomotive and railway operation briefing you on safety rules,signalling, boiler management, combustion,valve events, injectors, lubrication and braking systems, concluding aroud 17:00 hrs.

Day 2: starts at 08:30 at the shed for more theory and practical instruction.
Day 3:We start day 3at 08:30 when, under instruction you fully prepare the engine ready for work. You will familiarise yourself with the controls and how the engine handles by moving it around the shed yard, with precision stopping and coupling up, finally disposing of the engine around 17:00 hrs.

Days 4 & 5:The Real Thing:
Starting at 08:30 we prepare the engine and work a train of passenger vehicles on two return journeys through to Pickering each day with you and the other participants driving and firing,concluding around 18:00 each day.
Full lunch is provided on days 1-3 with a packed lunch on days 4 & 5.

Please note that the price covers food and travel on the day for the participant only.
